La Rochelle, the cycling capital
The first city to offer self-service bikes as early as the 1970s, La Rochelle has today established itself as a leading destination for bicycle tourism. Cycle paths, infrastructure and quality of life; discover why this city has long been on the road to sustainable transport.
A visionary region
In La Rochelle, cycling is not just a passing trend, it's a deeply rooted culture that has thrived for half a century. In 1976, while cars dominated cities across France, this coastal city launched a bold initiative: the "little yellow bikes," made available to everyone free of charge. In 2005, the program evolved into a full-fledged self-service bike network, accessible around the clock, well before Paris, Lyon, or other major cities followed suit. This pioneering approach has become a long-term commitment. Today, La Rochelle and its metropolitan area boast 450 km of cycling infrastructure, with an additional 340 km planned by 2030. The region has successfully developed a dense, safe, and diverse network of bike paths, suitable for both commuting and leisure. This commitment hasn’t gone unnoticed: in 2023, the French Federation of Bicycle Users named La Rochelle the most bike-friendly city in France among medium-sized cities.

Yélo and its 760 self-service bikes
The legacy of the little yellow bikes lives on through Yélo
Carrying forward the spirit of the original “little yellow bikes,” Yélo is La Rochelle’s modern self-service bike-sharing system. Available 24/7, the network offers 760 bicycles across 112 stations, serving not only La Rochelle but also six surrounding towns: Périgny, Lagord, Puilboreau, Aytré, Angoulins, and Châtelaillon-Plage.
To meet the needs of all users, electric bikes are gradually being added to the fleet, making cycling more accessible especially for seniors or those getting back in the saddle after a long break.
The service is seamlessly integrated with the Freebike app, which allows users to check bike availability in real time. This connected approach makes getting around by bike both easy and efficient.

A variety of routes between city and nature
The La Rochelle metropolitan area offers an exceptional range of cycling routes, from the lively quays of the Old Port to trails through open fields or along the coast, including the peaceful paths of the Rompsay Canal, a protected natural site that connects La Rochelle with Périgny, Dompierre-sur-Mer, and Sainte-Soulle.
Every bike ride becomes a chance to uncover a new perspective: a hidden piece of street art, a local market, or a quiet shady spot by the ocean.
Did you know that cycling is the fastest way to get around for trips under 5 km? That makes the bicycle your perfect everyday companion.

On the route of the Vélodyssée and the Vélo Francette
La Rochelle is also a must-visit stop along two major national cycling routes: the Vélodyssée, which follows the Atlantic coast from Roscoff in Brittany to Hendaye in the Basque Country, and the Vélo Francette, connecting the English Channel to the Atlantic with La Rochelle as its official endpoint.
For cycle tourists, it’s a chance to pause in a city that’s committed to sustainability, well-equipped for cyclists, and full of cultural, culinary, and historical treasures.
Along these routes, you’ll also find “Accueil Vélo” certified accommodations, offering ideal conditions for traveling cyclists from secure bike storage and repair kits to route advice and local tips.
