The living soul of La Rochelle
The vibrant, bohemian Saint-Nicolas district
Once the haunt of fishermen, the Saint-Nicolas district has evolved into a popular student spot. Today, in this charming neighborhood behind the Old Port, people come to stroll, shop, dine, and enjoy the nightlife. A lively and vibrant area, it's the very embodiment of La Rochelle’s unique lifestyle. This working-class-turned-bohemian neighborhood has managed to preserve its joyful and festive spirit from days gone by.
From fishermen to students
From Place de la Motte-Rouge, where the flea market is held on Thursdays and Saturdays, to the Rompsay Canal, extending from the Old Port, the district was born from the expansion of the old town beyond the canal. Once dedicated to port and fishing activities, you can still spot remnants of old warehouses along Rue Saint-Nicolas. It used to be the home port for Breton fishermen and a bustling working-class neighborhood during the day and into the night. The historic La Guignette bar, where students have now replaced the fishermen, stands as a living witness to that bygone era.

Between history and commerce
The Saint-Nicolas district is full of surprises. On Rue Sardinerie and Rue du Duc, modest-looking façades conceal hidden treasures and secret gardens. This neighborhood was the birthplace of Maison Godet, La Rochelle’s oldest cognac house, whose headquarters later moved to Laleu in the Rivauds area. The Bonaventure Godet footbridge, which crosses the Rompsay Canal, stands as a tribute to this proud chapter of local history.
Still a hub of commerce, Rue Saint-Nicolas is now a paradise for trendy, boho shopping, lined with designer boutiques, concept stores, local artisans, and beloved independent bookstores like Gréfine and Les Saisons, well known to the people of La Rochelle. You’ll also find chic and friendly spots to grab lunch or dinner.
It’s the kind of place where people gather at any time of day or evening to enjoy a drink in the shade of the magnificent Paulownia tree on Place de la Fourche or catch a rugby match at a pub, before diving into the district’s lively nightlife. A cherished local tradition!

What we love about the Saint-Nicolas district
We love losing track of time there, having a drink at noon or at midnight, stumbling upon a book we never thought to look for, laughing on a terrace, listening to shopkeepers chat. Saint-Nicolas is all about embracing the laid-back La Rochelle lifestyle.
