Visit, learn & protect
The extraordinary La Rochelle Aquarium
One family, one dream, and a story spanning 60 years. With 12,000 marine animals, 600 species, 82 tanks, and an unwavering commitment to marine life protection, the La Rochelle Aquarium invites you on a journey around the world into the vibrant and fragile world of the oceans.
The Aquarium
A living museum at the heart of the oceans
From the moment you step out of the elevator and descend into the ocean depths, the magic begins. The scenography gives full space to the spectacle. Small portholes or massive tanks reveal the hidden world of master camouflagers and the lords of the seas.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea in La Rochelle
From the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, from the Caribbean to the Indo-Pacific, soles, rays, jellyfish, sharks, turtles, anemones, seahorses, moray eels, and angelfish glide in a mesmerizing underwater ballet. Every viewing window is designed to be at eye level for all ages.
Short, educational texts enrich the visit with easy-to-understand scientific explanations, key facts, and memorable stories. The immersive, interactive journey makes learning fun, especially with activity booklets for younger visitors. Take your time to observe and maybe even spot some mischievous sea creatures hiding beneath the sand or tucked into the rocky crevices of their habitat!

A journey designed with both poetry and purpose
Educational yet enchanting, the tour guides you through each geographic zone and the natural habitats of marine species — from the rocky shores of La Rochelle to the hidden depths of the ocean.
A truly poetic moment awaits in the Gallery of Lights, where the secrets of fluorescence are revealed. In the tropical area, the names Nemo and Dory echo through the space — still the undisputed stars for children, who instantly recognize the clownfish and the blue tang.
After the dramatic shark tank and the vivid colors of exotic fish, the visit concludes in the tropical greenhouse, where your senses are immersed in fragrances, sounds, and dazzling light — gently bringing you back to dry land.

A family affair and a La Rochelle legacy
In the 1970s, René Coutant invented closed-loop saltwater aquariums, a revolutionary system now used in many of the world’s major aquariums. He founded the La Rochelle Aquarium in 1972, at the Port des Minimes, and later passed it on to his children, Roselyne and Pascal Coutant. In 1988, following a fire, France’s largest aquarium rose from the ashes near the Old Port. Since 2014, the third generation of the Coutant family has kept the vision alive.
The Center for Care, Study and Research of Sea Turtles
Ocean and sea turtle conservation
Located alongside the La Rochelle Aquarium, the Center for the Study, Care, and Research of Sea Turtles (CESTM) rescues, treats, and studies turtles before releasing them back into their natural habitat. It also coordinates an observation and research program that is vital to understanding this endangered species.
The La Rochelle Aquarium is renowned for its expertise in the breeding and rearing of around twenty marine species, as well as coral cultivation. It works in collaboration with a wide network of international scientific laboratories to support research and the preservation of the oceans and their inhabitants.
