La Rochelle, at the heart of major cycling routes

Vélodyssée: North or South along the Atlantic

La Rochelle is a major stop on the Vélodyssée, one of France’s longest cycling routes. This cycle route stretches along the Atlantic coast for over 1,300 km, from Brittany to the Basque Country.

Heading North

Head to Ré Island, the Vendée marshlands, and then Brittany. Maritime landscapes, locks, traditional ports and long cycle paths punctuate the journey.

Heading South

Following the Charente estuary, you reach Rochefort, Royan and then the vast beaches of the Landes. A mix of maritime heritage and protected natural areas.

Accessible, well-signposted and full of services, the Vélodyssée makes La Rochelle an ideal starting point for a multi-day bike trip.

The Vélo Francette: a scenic journey to the Marais Poitevin

Another iconic cycling route is The Vélo Francette, which connects La Rochelle to Ouistreham in Normandy.

Starting from the Atlantic coast, the route heads inland toward:

  • The Marais Poitevin
  • Niort
  • The lush green valleys of western France

Less crowded than the main coastal cycling routes, the Vélo Francette is renowned for its peaceful atmosphere, scenic towpaths, and charming villages, between lovely waterways and rural heritage.

The greenway to Esnandes: cycling between marshlands and bay

Looking for a shorter ride? Starting at the Old Port and quickly joining the cycling facilities leading through Port-Neuf and Nieul-sur-Mer, a dedicated greenway provides a safe route to Esnandes, covering approximately 15 km one way. Allow between 1 and 1.5 hours of cycling, depending on your pace.

The route crosses the open landscapes of the Aiguillon Bay, follows the marshlands, and reveals a territory shaped by water. Upon arrival, the Marais Poitevin Bay Visitor Centre offers fascinating insights into the area's rich ecological heritage.

This is an ideal day trip, suitable for families and a perfect illustration of the remarkable natural diversity of the La Rochelle area.
