Set Sail for Adventure!
La Rochelle in the rain
When it rains, forget the umbrella that’s bound to turn inside out in the wind! Put on a good rain hat, slip into boots and a raincoat, and head out to explore La Rochelle — a city that won’t let a few raindrops spoil the fun. We’re not going to melt, are we?
Don’t miss it
Singing under the arcades
Before ducking into indoor attractions, enjoy a stroll under the arcades in the city centre. These covered walkways, remnants of La Rochelle’s merchant history, let you wander and shop while staying dry (and even shady in summer!).

Culture
Shelter in the museums
Whether you’re visiting or a local, rainy days are perfect to (re)discover the city’s museums. Bonus: many are included in the La Rochelle Océan Pass, and several open their doors for free every first Sunday of the month. Plenty of good reasons to stay curious, rain or shine.
A magical dive
The Aquarium
La Rochelle’s Aquarium, open daily from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., invites you on an underwater journey through the world’s oceans. It’s an emblematic site blending wonder, education, and commitment to marine life. To avoid the rainy-day crowds, visit early in the morning or later in the evening.

Heritage
Step back in time
Included in the La Rochelle Océan Pass, the city’s iconic towers are a must-see, offering a unique panorama over the city and harbor. Note: Saint-Nicolas Tower is currently closed for renovations, but you can still admire its imposing silhouette and visit the other towers.
Also included: Château de Buzay in La Jarne — an 18th-century gem open from May to October. Saint-Louis Cathedral is free to visit during opening hours.
Explore & discover
An escape to the North
Take a break at the Maison de la Baie du Marais Poitevin and visit the Mussel Farming Museum, where you’ll learn everything about mussel farming (free with the Océan Pass). Don’t miss the fortified church, a true architectural wonder! Open to the public from April to September.

Tips for rainy days in La Rochelle
- Remember to book indoor activities, especially during school holidays.
- Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes: wet cobblestones can be slippery.
- At our office, we're all about raincoats! They're super handy for getting anywhere dry (and looking stylish, of course), and there are bus and park-and-ride options for getting into town quickly without spending hours walking in the rain.

Rain will never stop you from exploring La Rochelle! Whether you're a culture lover, looking for entertainment or relaxation, the city is full of activities to do while staying dry. So, plan your itinerary and enjoy every moment, whatever the weather! 😁
