Getting there without a car
The good news is you can easily reach Oléron Island from La Rochelle without a car.
Regular Nouvelle-Aquitaine regional buses connect La Rochelle to Oléron year-round. A practical way to explore the island’s main sites while reducing your environmental impact.
You can also take a ferry to Boyardville or Saint-Denis. For a day trip, hop on a cruise from La Rochelle’s Old Port to Fort Boyard, with a stop on Oléron Island.
Once you’re there, biking is one of the best ways to explore Oléron. With over 160km of cycling routes, the island is easily discovered between beaches, forests, marshlands and villages.
To make getting around even easier, consider the La Rochelle Océan Pass which includes access to public transport, as well as many attractions and activities in La Rochelle, the surrounding area, and nearby coastal islands. It’s the perfect solution for combining a visit to La Rochelle with an island getaway.

Eco-friendly travel: on foot or by bike
Exploring Oléron Island by bike means choosing a low-impact way to experience nature. It’s the perfect way to fully immerse yourself in the island’s landscapes and gentle rhythm.
With 160 km of cycling paths, you can crisscross the island at your own pace, through marshes and forests. The terrain is mostly flat, making these routes accessible to the whole family.
For the more adventurous, you can cycle across the entire island. Once you reach the Chassiron Lighthouse at the northern tip, head back down along the wild west coast to admire the Atlantic waves crashing against the shore.
No bike? No problem! Nearly 30 bike rental shops are scattered across the island, so you're sure to find one nearby. If you'd rather explore on a scooter, some rental shops offer those too.
If you’re more of a walker than a cyclist, lace up your sneakers and hit one of the many hiking trails for a 100% invigorating, nature-filled stroll.
