Aix Island
A natural and historic escape near La Rochelle
Centuries have passed, but the island has managed to keep its wild character. This small crescent of land, with Fort Boyard standing proudly opposite, it brings together the typical landscapes of Charente-Maritime. Here, time seems to stand still, with very few motorised vehicles on the island.
Classified as a remarkable natural site for many years, just like Ré Island or Oléron Island, it is a true haven of peace. By bike, on foot or in a horse-drawn carriage, the tour of the island is very easy and offers an exceptional view of Fort Boyard, Madame Island or even Oléron Island, which are just a short distance away.
A Walk Through History
Aix Island is steeped in history. This is where Napoleon Bonaparte spent his final days in France before being exiled to Saint Helena. After his defeat at Waterloo in 1815, he stayed four days in the former commandant’s house, which he had built in 1808, now home to the Musée Napoléon.
In the 16th century, the construction of the port of Rochefort led to the fortification of the Charente estuary. The engineer Vauban built defensive structures here, shaping the village we see today. Later, in the 19th century, Fort Liédot was added. And today, it’s open to visitors with the La Rochelle Océan Pass.
The island also bears witness to a darker chapter: during the French Revolution, in 1794, hundreds of religious figures (including priests) were imprisoned on ships in the bay under terrible conditions. Some are now buried in the crypt of the Church of Saint-Martin.
